The following examples are designed to be representative of what may occur as an Active Retirement Assignment is developed in conjunction with the department supervisor.
FACULTY
Instruction by Instructional Faculty
Assignments for those retired faculty who will be teaching will be computed on the basis of load hours. Per Kay Ulmer, the District’s ARP Coordinator:
The formula used for faculty, adjunct faculty and the retirement program is 1 load hour is equal to 2 clock hours. This is also the formula designated by Arizona State Retirement to determine faculty eligibility.
Example:
Total of 306 hours or 30% AR assignment. 9 [load hours] x 2 [clock hours] x 17 [weeks/semester] = 306 clock hours]
A retiree teaching a total of 9 load hours over the academic year would have 153 hours of class time and 153 hours for preparation, office hours, class/department/division activities and/or College/District activities.
As a double check on her calculations, we can consider calculations in two ways:
- 306 clock hours divided by 1020 contract hours = 30% of a contract OR
- 9 load hours divided by 30 contract load hours = 30% of a contract.
Either way, the retiree would get a 30% Active Retirement contract.
In working with Ann Lindner from our Mathematics Department, a factor of 1.13 clock hours per load was developed to reflect the class-related work, leaving the remaining hours for other division or college activities. Using Kay Ulmer’s example:
9 load hours x 2 clock hours x 17 weeks/semester = 306 clock hours due for the 30% contract. Of those 306 clock hours, a portion would be devoted to class work and the remaining to other activities in the following way:
- 9 load hours x 1.13 factor for class-related work hours x 17 weeks = 173 class-related work hours
- 306 contract hours minus 173 class-related work hours = 133 clock hours of prep time, which includes class/department/division activities and/or College/District activities.
- Active Retirement Contract = 30%
What equals 49% for an instructional faculty?
Few of our course combinations total 14.9 load hours -- the amount that represents 49% of 30 load hours. Those teaching 4 3-load hour courses for a total of 12 load hours would receive a 40% contract (12 divided by 30). Those teaching 3 4.7-load courses for a total of 14.1 load hours would receive a 47% contract (14.1 divided by 30).
If the department or college needed some specialized help with a curriculum project or work with students or similar faculty duties, additional load-hour-equivalent work hours could be discussed with the department chair and dean of instruction. Additional work would be on a college-need basis.
Service by a Service Faculty Member
If the service faculty member received a 30% assignment, 1190 contract hours x 30% = 357 hours over the course of the fiscal year. The work done would be the same as the work done by the service faculty member when s/he was covered by the RFP.
Instruction Assignment by a Service Faculty Member
If a service faculty receives an active retirement assignment that is teaching only, the instructional faculty computations would be used.
PSA/MAT/M&0/SAFETY
The Active Retiree’s assignment would reflect a percentage of the number of hours in the Governing Board adopted calendar for a 9-month, 9.5-month, 10-month or 12-month employee. For FY05-06, for example, the number of contract hours are:
- 9.0 month, full-time employee: 1560 hours
- 9.5 month, full-time employee: 1640 hours
- 10.0 month, full-time employee: 1720 hours
- 12.0 month, full-time employee: 2080 hours
If a 12-month employee receives a 49% assignment, the number of contract hours would be multiplied by 49% and would receive a contract at the appropriate hourly rate for that number of hours.
If a 12-month employee receives an assignment for 750 hours a year, the 750 hours divided by 2080 = 36% ARP contract or 36% of the job assignment salary.
The assignment would be paid at the rate of the job being done.
